" Go to web-site "

To invoke this command, say: " Go to web-site "
" Go to web page "
" Pick web page "
" Pick web-site "

Say " go to web-site " to select a web-site from your browser's favorites or enter a URL by voice. Upon recognition, this voice command brings a rich translucent environment that allows the speaker to specify a web-site from multiple ways, as shown below.

Screenshot: The 'Go to web-site' translucent environment (click on picture to enlarge)

While displaying the translucent environment, SpeechVibe reads the browser's favorites from the speaker's default browser.

From that environment, you may do one of the following:

  • Say 'Pick number' from an item in the list of Browser's favorites categories (like "Pick twenty-one" to see the Browser's favorites associated with "Links" from the previous screenshot).
That will result in having the right list scroll to the first associated Browser favorite and pause for a moment.
  • Say 'Pick number' from an item in the list of Browser's favorite (like "Pick twenty four" to go to the RealPlayer URL).
That results in invoking the speaker's default browser to go to the associated URL and immediately closing the translucent window environment.
  • Spell-out a URL followed by " Enter ".
All the keys in the virtual keyboard that are green are enabled. The ones that are red are disabled.
The phonetic alphabet that is used is the one from the active context's spelling preferences.

Some shortcuts are available for spelling:

    • " HTTP " is a shortcut for "http://" and it clears the URL upon recognition
    • " FTP " is a shortcut for "ftp://" and it clears the URL upon recognition
    • " triple W " is a shortcut for "www."
    • " dot com " is a shortcut for ".com"
    • " dot net " is a shortcut for ".net"

For example, it is possible to say " HTTP triple-W Charlie November November dot com enter " to go to "http://www.cnn.com".

  • Say " Help me " to invoke the documentation.
  • At any time, you may also say " Escape " to close the translucent environment without invoking any URL.

Requirements to access the " Go to web-site " voice command

  • The microphone needs to be on.
  • If the microphone is already on, the SpeechVibe icon in the system tray is . This requirement is then fulfilled.

If the SpeechVibe icon in the system tray is , then the microphone is sleeping. To turn it on, you can:
    • Say " microphone on ".
    • Say the attention word. The default attention word that you can change in your preferences is " computer ". When the attention word is recognized, the microphone will be turned on but SpeechVibe will turn it back to sleep after 10 to 30 seconds (depending on your preferences) following the last recognized command.
    • Click on the icon with the left mouse button.
    • Click on the icon with the right mouse button and select the Microphone on item from the menu.

    • Click on the icon with the right mouse button and select the Microphone on item from the menu.
If the SpeechVibe icon in the system tray is , then the microphone is off and not available. To turn it on, you need to:
    1. Click on the icon in order to bring the modal window blocking the microphone to the front. Typically, the preference window causes the microphone to become unavailable since SpeechVibe can't be used while it is modifying its own settings.
    2. Close the modal window so that the microphone is restored to its original state.
If the SpeechVibe icon in the system tray is , then an error occured. Restart SpeechVibe by right-clicking on and then selecting the Exit menu item and relaunching SpeechVibe from the Start Windows menu. If after relaunching SpeechVibe the error icon reappears, contact SpeechVibe's technical support.

  • Command and Control needs to be enabled for the context (by default it is).
  • If the status icon associated with Command and Control has a green background (as shown below within the red circle), then Command and Control is enabled for the context.

If the status icons are not visible, say " Flash SpeechVibe " and they will be shown momentarily.

If the status icon associated with Command and Control has a red background (as shown below within the red circle), then Command and Control is disabled for the context.

To enable Command and Control for the context, invoke the preferences from the SpeechVibe menu. In the 'General' page, set the 'Command and Control' feature to 'Enabled' (as shown below).

  • The built-in command " Go to web-site " needs to be enabled for the context (by default it is).
  • In SpeechVibe, every command can be disabled or customized accordingly to the speaker's wishes. From the 'Built-in commands' page in the preferences, ensure that the Go to web-site voice command has the 'Enable built-in ways to invoke' check box selected. In order to see that user-interface, you will need to switch to the 'Advanced view' in the preferences window.

Screenshot: 'Built-in commands' preferences page's advanced view where you may find the Go to web-site voice command (click on picture to enlarge)

Should the built-in command " Go to web-site " have the 'Enable built-in ways to invoke' check-box not selected, then it is not possible to say " Go to web-site " and have it recognized by SpeechVibe. In that event, the ways to invoke the voice command Go to web-site is not by saying " Go to web-site " but by saying it as described in the 'Custom ways to invoke'. If 'Custom ways to invoke' is empty and 'Enable built-in ways to invoke' check-box is not selected, then it is not possible to invoke the voice command " Go to web-site ".

  • IMPORTANT: SpeechVibe needs to be actively listening.
  • When the microphone is on or sleeping and it is actively listening, the microphone icon's border in the system tray moves. If you do not see the icon's border move, SpeechVibe or Windows is busy on another task. Do not talk when SpeechVibe is not actively listening. Instead wait for the icon in the system tray to move again before talking.
